Academy Acquires Rare 2001: A Space Odyssey Model for $344,000

The Academy is expanding its collection for the upcoming Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, having secured the Aries 1B Trans-Lunar Space Shuttle from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Academy purchased the model at Premiere Props’ Hollywood Extravaganza auction last Saturday for the impressive sum of $344,000.

The first great robot in the history of cinema is entirely Italian: nearly 40 years before the famous Robby from Forbidden Planet, the forerunner of all science fiction automatons worldwide was the colossal protagonist of the extremely rare silent film L'uomo meccanico, produced in Italy by the Società Anonima Milano Films in 1921.
